About the music
There is a story behind this.
Many years ago when I was a student, I used to frequent a room simply called the "Theatre" every lunch hour and just randomly played anything I felt like on the piano that was there. The Theatre was used for drama classes, but I loved playing in it (even if the piano wasn't great) because it was a big room and very black – black walls, black chairs, black curtains – and I could make as much noise as I'd like. Trained in improvisation and classical technique, I was fascinated by the idea of coming up with complete compositions on the fly, music weaved from the moment for that moment in time. Occasionally, other students who happened to be in the building would come by; quite often, they were merely curious as to why there should be music coming from a supposedly empty room. Seeking solitude and quietude from the day-to-day stress and hassle, they sometimes sit and listen to my music to their hearts' content. When I stop, they would thank me, asked me what it was that I'd just played, and I'd say, "I have no idea. Just made it up, really." And they always seemed to accept it and went on their way.
"Impromptu" is an attempt to replicate these encounters but online. I play mostly for myself, but an audience is a welcome friend. In all the years that I've done this, I have never recorded anything, nor have I written anything down. Everything you hear is recorded in completion in a single take, and this is what I've composed on the spot with no prior preparation or any idea of what might come out of it. That's why you will find no archives. However, due to popular demand, I have created an RSS feed just for the music. It is a celebration of the chance encounter, and purely of present and the now. I hope you enjoy it as much as I love playing it.
